In Italo Eis, the artist eats an ice cream in the colors of the Italian flag while standing in a popular spot that fills up with tourists.
ON TIME – U Sophie-Charlotte Platz, Berlin, 2024.
On Time is a performance that took place in the subway station U Sophie-Charlotte-Platz in Berlin at 6pm on August 15th 2024. It highlights the constant time pressure on the female body and the ticking of its biological clock.
In the performance the artist’s body imitates the movements of a moving clock hand, at the tip of which is a melting block of ice. At the end of the performance, the artist destroys the block of ice.
The Performance was part of an installation by the artist in the cabin of Cabine Cabinet, a project space curated by Muriel Lisk-McIntyre that used to be an old BVG information desk at Ubahn 2, Sophie-Charlotte-Platz in Berlin.
Performance Instructions The artist walks on the track of the subway station Sophie-Charlotte-Platz around the installation in Cabine Cabinet until she reaches her final position and kneels in front of the cabine, facing the tracks. During the whole performance she is holding up a block of ice, moving her upper body from left to right until she breaks the ice on the floor.
Installation Behind the artist in the glass cabinet, one can see an installation. A paper collage is hanging from the pole, dividing the cabinet space. The letters quote two songs that deal with the concept of “too late”.
Sound Collage The sound collage uses samples of interview snippets and commentary about the age, relationship status, family planning and the appearance of famous female protagonists.
NO ONE OWNS ME, Athens, 2024.
DAPHNE RAN AWAY FROM APOLLO BECAUSE HE WAS HARASSING HER. IN HER DESPARATION SHE TURNED INTO A TREE. APOLLO RIPPED OUT A BRANCH TO CARRY DAPHNE WITH HIM. THE LAUREL WREATH BECAME A SYMBOL OF VICTORY AND HONOR.
BY PLACING A LAUREL WREATH ON A DAPHNE TREE, WE ARE GIVING DAPHNE HER AUTONOMY BACK. WOMEN AND NO ONE ELSE OWN THEIR BODIES.
No one owns me is a performative action that took place in the city of Athens, Greece in November 2024.
It is based on the story of Apollo and Daphne in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Book 1 and highlights the circumstances through which the laurel wreath acquired its symbolic meaning of “triumph, achievement and victory”. No one owns me focuses on the role of Daphne. The action honors her resistance and struggle and seeks to give Daphne back her body autonomy.
The artist bought golden laurel wreaths, popular souvenirs in Athens, and placed them “back” onto Daphne bushes and trees in the city center, among them the big Daphne tree by the lake in the National Garden. Below the installations and in between the stations, posters with information about the action were distributed.
